The all-new RAM Hurricane engine, here to replace the HEMI

Before the arrival of the Hurricane engine, which replaces the current 5.7 L HEMI V8, 3 engines were available for the Ram 1500.

What are the new RAM Hurricane engine’s specs? What are the differences between the Hurricane engine HEMI vs Hurricane? Does this new powertrain offer better performance?

Thibault Chrysler Amos, your Chrysler dealership in Abitibi, tells you more about the all-new RAM engine that will be taking place under the hood of the RAM 1500, as early as 2025!

The following table shows the differences in performance between the 5.7-litre V8 powering the current Ram 1500 and the 2 Hurricane 6-cylinder engines now available:

The RAM 1500 and the Available Powertrains

At the moment, and before the Hurricane arrives ‒here to replace the current RAM Hurricane engine 5.7 L HEMI V8- there are 3 powertrains offered on it.

3.6 L Pentastar V6

This entry-level powertrain provides you with 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft. maximum torque, and it comes with the eTorque mild-hybrid technology, which allows you to enjoy an added 90 lb-ft. maximum torque upon ignition. It is standard offered on the Tradesman and Big Horn trim levels.

Moreover, it allows the RAM 1500 to tow between 7,460 lbs (4x4) and 7,710 lbs (4x2).

5.7 L HEMI V8 

The 2024 model year is the last to benefit from this high-performance 395 hp/410 lb-ft of torque mild-hybrid powertrain. Here too, the eTorque technology will allow you to add an extra 130 lb-ft. maximum torque upon ignition, which is a significant increase.

When it comes to the maximum towing capacity, the 5.7 L HEMI V8 allows the 4x4 trims to tow a maximum of 11,410 pounds, while this capacity reaches 12,750 pounds for the 4x2 trim levels.

For Ram 2025 models, this engine is replaced by the new Hurricane engine, which we'll talk about later.

3.0 L EcoDiesel V6

This powertrain is also retiring after the 2023 model-year; offering 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft. maximum torque, it allowed the RAM 1500 truck to tow up to 12,560 pounds, placing it at the top of its category. 

Take note that a turbodiesel powertrain is still offered on the RAM Super Duty models (2500 and 3500).

6.2 L Supercharged HEMI V8

A last hurrah for this powerful engine, available exclusively on the RAM 1500 TRX. With 702 horsepower/650 lb-ft. maximum torque ‒making it a top contender in its segment-, it offers a towing capacity of 8,100 pounds.

This powertrain being removed from the catalog also marks the end of the RAM TRX trim level; but another model will soon come to fill the empty spot left behind by the departure of this powerful RAM 1500.

The All-New Hurricane vs HEMI

Let’s now see what the all-new RAM Hurricane engine has in store for us; which is already available from your Thibault Chrysler dealership in Amos. Two versions are available: a base version with 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft. maximum torque and a high output Hurricane, available in the RAM 1500 H/O, here to replace the TRX trim. This powertrain will provide you with 540 horsepower and 521 maximum torque.

This amount of power is significantly superior to what is offered by the current 5.7 L HEMI V8, no matter the selected Hurricane version.

And when it comes to the maximum towing capacity, this all-new RAM 1500 Hurricane allow you to tow 11,850 pounds. Moreover, the 8- speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission is retained in the catalog for 2025; the RAM 1500 models equipped with the Hurricane powertrain also come with a new rear axle.

Let’s also take note that a new axle ratio (3.55) will also be added to the already existing 3.92 and 3.21 ratios. Here are more details:

• 21: Standard offered on the Tradesman and Big Horn only.
• 55: Standard offered on the Sport and Laramie models, optional on the Tradesman and Big Horn.
• 92: Standard offered on the Rebel, Limited and Tungsten, optional on the Tradesman, Big Horn, Sport and Laramie.

The choice of the axle ratio on a RAM 1500 truck can have a significant impact on fuel consumption and towing capacity.

What is an axle ratio exactly? This means that for each complete revolution of the axle, the driveshaft will complete around 3.92 revolutions (which also affects the rotational speed at the wheels), in the case of a 3.92 axle ratio, for example.

A higher axle ratio means that the engine will have to spin faster, at any given speed, which also leads to an increase in fuel consumption.

On the other hand, a lower axle ratio means that the engine will be operating at a lower speed, even when driving at the same velocity, which automatically reduces the fuel consumption.

Moreover, the towing capacity is also directly influenced by this axle ratio. In fact, a higher axle ratio generally translates into better torque, which can also increase the towing capacity.

Inversely, a lower axle ratio can also possibly reduce the towing capacity slightly in certain conditions, given that the engine torque is inferior as well.

Choosing the right axle ratio will depend mainly on the driver’s needs, who will have to determine if energy efficiency or towing capacity is the priority, or if perhaps a compromise between both is the best solution.

Fuel Consumption According to the Selected Powertrain

The fuel consumption numbers for the RAM 1500 depend mainly on the powertrain with which it is equipped.

The 2024 RAM 1500 does not offer the Hurricane engine and official consumption numbers have yet to be released. But here is a sneak peek of the currently available powertrains and their energy efficiency.
